Hiroshima and Miyajima: Two Sides of Japan

When people think of Japan, it's often the bright lights of Tokyo, cherry blossoms or perhaps a bullet train that springs to mind. But there's another side to Japan that I find equally fascinating — one where history, natural beauty and centuries-old traditions sit comfortably alongside modern life.

And nowhere is that contrast more apparent than in Hiroshima and Miyajima.

When I put together a hosted tour, I don't simply join the dots on a map. Every place has to earn its spot on the itinerary. I want each destination to offer something different — whether that's history, culture, breathtaking scenery, incredible food or those unexpected moments that become the stories you tell long after you've returned home.

Hiroshima: A City of Resilience and Hope

For many people, Hiroshima is defined by a single day in history. While the past is an important part of visiting, it isn't the only reason I chose to spend three nights here on our Japan tour.

Today, Hiroshima is one of Japan's most welcoming cities. It's vibrant, green and full of optimism, and I think that's what makes it such a powerful place to experience.

Rather than being overwhelmed by tragedy, visitors often leave feeling inspired by the resilience of its people and their commitment to peace.

Our visit will include the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, where history is told with honesty and dignity. It's an experience that stays with people long after they leave.

But Hiroshima is also our gateway to one of Japan's most iconic sights.

Miyajima: Where Nature Meets Tradition

Just across the water lies Miyajima, famous for its magnificent floating torii gate, which appears to rise from the sea at high tide.

It's a place to slow down, wander the charming streets, sample local treats and soak up the atmosphere.

Weather permitting, we'll ride the ropeway towards Mount Misen, where spectacular views across the Seto Inland Sea await.

These contrasting experiences appeal to me most—quiet reflection in Hiroshima, followed by the natural beauty and timeless traditions of Miyajima.

More Than Just Ticking Off the Sights

For me, the best travel experiences aren't necessarily about how many famous landmarks you can squeeze into a day.

They're about discovering what makes a place special, allowing time to appreciate it and sharing those experiences with others.

That's the thinking behind our Coast, Culture & Timeless Traditions hosted tour of Japan in May 2027 — a carefully chosen collection of destinations, each with its own story to tell.

And Hiroshima and Miyajima are just the beginning.
